Answers to questions about carpet repairs, restretching, wrinkling and patching!

Repairs to carpet includes the repair of rips and tears, wrinkling, indentations, seam tears and buckling of carpet. The causes of these types of carpet damage can be many. To follow you will find a few of the symptoms, their causes and possible remedies.

Fixing Split Seams and Carpet Tearing

Unfortunately, split seams in a carpet that is installed wall to wall can be difficult and time consuming to fix. We have the equipment and the knowledge to cut and recreate the seam and glue back down. We do this by releasing the tension of the carpet and using a power stretcher or carpet kicker (depending on the size of the room and the existing seams) to create a stronger seam. Small snags and tears can usually be repaired at home with the proper tools.

Patching a damaged area can be done using some of the same techniques. Repairs can be made to remove an area of damaged carpet and replace it with a like kind and quality and seam in the new patch. The patch can be made invisible, provided that the patch is a match to the existing carpet. A high traffic area is a lot less likely place to patch, just because trying to find a suitable patch will be very difficult. It is important to note that when you originally have your carpet installed, keeping a few spare pieces can be handy in the case of a rip or a tear. This way if damage occurs, you have a piece of carpet that matches the room. Keep in mind that carpet does fade over the years, so there might be a slight difference in color. We can often take a patch from a hidden area, such as a closet, when there is not a spare original piece of carpet.

Stop Your Carpet from Fading

One of the problems with carpet is that over the years the color fades. One of the major reasons that carpet color fades is direct sunlight. Ultra violet light waves damage the color of carpet over time. In order to reduce the amount of color fade think about adding UV protection to your windows. Another easy option is to add shades or blinds to a room and keep them closed when the room is not in use. We also have a chemical treatment to prevent UV damage to your carpet. See our carpet cleaning supplies link.

Repair Carpet Wrinkles

Carpet wrinkles or ripples occur mostly due to varying temperatures and improper installation. Some carpet wrinkling can occur at the time of cleaning due to humidity which creates hydrostatic pressure under the carpet. If this is a result of a routine carpet cleaning, this is entirely normal and will resolve itself through the drying process. Other types of moisture that create this problem need to be addressed before repairs or

re-stretching are done in order to more permanently remedy the wrinkling. Our professional staff is ready to assist you with getting that new carpet look when restretching is necessary.

Removing Carpet Indentations

Carpet indentations usually occur when heavy objects are left for a considerable amount of time on carpet in one place. To remove indentations, you can turn your iron on to the lowest "steam" setting. Apply a thick, wet towel on the indentation and place the steaming iron on top of the wet towel. BE VERY CAREFUL not to touch the carpet fibers with the iron. Check indentation every 30 seconds. Do not let sit longer than 2 minutes total, checking periodically for lifting of carpet fibers.
